1945 August 6: US drops atomic bomb on #Hiroshima.
The first atomic bomb has been dropped by a #UnitedStates aircraft on the #Japanese city of #Hiroshima on 1945 August 06.The bomb was dropped from an American #B29 Superfortress, known as #EnolaGay, at 08:15 local time.
The Hiroshima bomb, known as #LittleBoy - a reference to former President #Roosevelt, contained the equivalent of between 12 and 15,000 tons of TNT and devastated an area of five square miles (13 square kilometres). More than 60% of the buildings in the city were destroyed.
President #Harry_S_Truman, announcing the news from the cruiser, USS Augusta, in the mid-Atlantic, said the device was more than 2,000 times more powerful than the largest bomb used to date.
1945 August 9: Atom bomb hits #Nagasaki!
#Nagasaki was one of Japan's most important ports providing vital access to and from #Shanghai.American forces have dropped an atomic bomb at #Nagasaki on 1945 August 9- the second such attack on #Japan in three days.
The bomb was dropped by parachute from an American #B29 Bomber at 11:02 local time.
The bomb, nick-named #FatMan in a reference to #WinstonChurchill, measured just under 3.5m (11ft 4in) in length, had the power of 22 kilotons of TNT and weighed 4,050kg (9,000lbs).
About 30% of Nagasaki, including almost all the industrial district was destroyed by the bomb and nearly 74,000 were killed and a similar number injured.
The attacks on #Hiroshima and #Nagasaki were the #FirstTime #AtomicBombs had been used in #warfare.
